Chia Longman is associate professor in gender studies and anthropology at the Department of Languages and Cultures in the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy at Ghent University. She directs the Centre for Research on Culture and Gender and the Inter-university Master Programme in Gender and Diversity. Longman was trained in sociocultural anthropology yet developed an early passion for social justice and feminist thought. Her key intellectual interest is the relationship between human sexual difference, gender relations and inequality, driven by the question whether this relationship is absolute and universal, or contingent upon cultural diversity and societal change. Longman’s appointment is in gender studies, yet as an interdisciplinary field, she also has close affinities with religious studies; socio-cultural anthropology and qualitative sociology, and other more recently developed interdisciplinary fields such as diversity studies, ethnic studies and migration studies.
